The LINE is one of the most fundamental and expressive visual languages in art. It serves not only as the foundation of visual form but also as a carrier of emotion, thought, and spirit. From the patterns carved onto ancient artifacts to the fluid brushstrokes of calligraphy and the intricate motifs created through embroidery, lines have long embodied humanity’s desire to record, express, and create.

Within Chinese cultural traditions, calligraphy and embroidery represent two distinct yet deeply connected forms of “Line-based” art. Calligraphy employs brush and ink as its medium, revealing the writer’s temperament, energy, and rhythm of life through variations of pressure, movement, and pace. Embroidery, by contrast, uses silk thread as its language, shaping images and narratives through the interweaving of warp and weft while embodying extraordinary craftsmanship and aesthetic refinement. Though different in material and technique, both art forms are centered on the expressive potential of the line. Through its organization, rhythm, and movement, the line constructs rich visual worlds and conveys profound cultural meanings.

Throughout Chinese history—from the grandeur of the Han and Tang dynasties, to the literati spirit of the Song and Yuan periods, and the highly refined craft traditions of the Ming and Qing dynasties—both calligraphy and embroidery have continuously evolved, reflecting the distinctive character of their times. The characters, images, and patterns formed by lines not only document changes in social life and cultural values but also carry forward generations of aesthetic knowledge and spiritual aspiration. In many ways, the history of Chinese culture itself can be seen as a history written and woven through countless lines.

In this exhibition, calligraphy artist Lanting Liu and fashion designer and artist Jun Tang approach the concept of the LINE through the respective traditions of calligraphy and embroidery, each offering a distinctive contemporary response to its enduring significance.

Having lived in North America for many years, Lanting Liu has continually explored the possibilities of Chinese calligraphy within a cross-cultural context. Grounded in traditional brush-and-ink practice while embracing modern ideas of individual expression and artistic freedom, she transforms calligraphy from a mode of textual inscription into a visual language characterized by improvisation, expressiveness, and spatial dynamism. In her work, the line retains the inner resonance and vitality of Eastern calligraphic traditions while embodying an open, liberated, and distinctly contemporary spirit.

Jun Tang draws inspiration from the rich heritage of Chinese embroidery, translating its cultural memory and aesthetic values into the language of contemporary fashion. Her practice engages with embroidery’s visual traditions, symbolic meanings, and narrative functions. Through innovative combinations of textile, structure, and embroidery techniques, she recontextualizes historical cultural elements within the framework of globalization and contemporary life, allowing traditional culture to find new forms of expression and visual presence. When the ink line of calligraphy encounters the silk thread of embroidery, two seemingly different mediums enter into a dialogue that transcends time and space. Together, they connect tradition and contemporaneity, East and West, craft and art, body and spirit. In these works, the line is no longer merely a formal element; it becomes a trace of cultural memory, personalexperience, and creative energy in motion. Through these interwoven lines, traditional culture is not only preserved, but continually reinterpreted, transformed, and renewed within the contemporary world.

“线”是艺术最基本、也最富表现力的视觉语言之一;是视觉形态的构成基础,也是情感与精神的载体。从远古先民在器物上刻下的纹样到书法家笔下流转生动的笔墨及刺绣艺人织绣出的图像与纹饰,线条始终承载着人类记录、表达与创造的愿望。

在中国传统文化中,书法与刺绣分别代表着两种独特而深厚的“线”性艺术。书法以笔墨为媒介,通过提按顿挫、轻重缓急的变化,展现书写者的精神气质与生命节奏;刺绣则以丝线为语言,在经纬交织之间塑造形象、叙述故事,凝聚创作者精湛的技艺与审美智慧。二者都以“线”为核心,通过线条的组织、韵律与运动,构建出丰富的视觉世界和文化意涵。

纵观中国历史,无论是汉唐的恢宏气象、宋元的文人精神,还是明清时期高度成熟的工艺传统,书法与刺绣都在时代的发展中不断演变,形成鲜明的历史特征。那些由线条构成的文字、图像与纹样,不仅记录着社会生活与文化观念的变迁,也承载着代代相传的审美经验与精神追求。中国文化的发展史,也是一部由无数线条共同书写与编织而成的历史。

本次展览中,书法艺术家刘兰汀与时装设计艺术家汤俊分别从书法与刺绣两种传统艺术中出发,以各自独特的创作实践回应“线”的当代意义。刘兰汀长期生活于北美,在跨文化环境的滋养与碰撞中,持续探索中国书法在当代语境中的可能性。她以传统笔墨为根基,同时吸收现代艺术关于自由表达与个体意识的观念,使书法从文字书写转化为一种具有即兴性、表现性与空间感的视觉语言。在她的作品中,线条既保留着东方书写艺术的内在气韵,又呈现出开放、自由而充满生命力的当代精神。

汤俊则从中国传统刺绣艺术中汲取灵感,将古老工艺所蕴含的文化记忆与东方美学转化为当代时装设计语言。她关注刺绣所承载的图像传统、象征意义以及叙事功能,通过面料、结构与刺绣工艺的重新组合,将历史文化元素置于全球化与当代生活的背景之中,使传统文化获得新的表达方式与视觉形态。

当书法的墨线与刺绣的丝线相遇,两种看似完全不同的媒介产生了跨越时空的对话。它们既连接着传统与当代,也连接着东方与西方;既连接着手工与艺术,也连接着身体与精神。在这些作品中,线条不再只是形式上的存在,而成为文化记忆、个体经验与创造力流动的轨迹。透过这些交织的线条,让传统文化在当代语境中延续、转化与重生。
